kyle,
have i met you?

i used to set up all the good shows in WW, and managed KWCW. Now I live in Anacortes.

My crappy piano playing is all over that Adrian Orange record. Get the "interdependance dance" seven-inch to hear me ruining adrian's songs with my ACID JAZZ grooves.

no, i don't believe we've met. i'm a music director at kwcw currently (maybe GM next year!). you're on the adrian orange record? that's pretty great...and as far as i can tell your piano playing hasn't ruined anything.

are you coming to the show in walla walla? & how did you find this tiny little blog?

also, tell me how to set up all the good shows, please.

I won't be at the show, unfortunately--i'm running the Dept of Safety up here and we have to paint the building this weekend.

I found your blog whilst shamelessly googling for reviews of the Adrian Orange & Her Band record!

If you are serious about booking rad all-ages shows, you should introduce yourself to Calvin (and Adrian) and tell him you're the MD and maybe GM next year. Say "I want to be the new walla walla guy" and he will know what you mean. I know Calvin was bummed that he didn't have a KWCW contact anymore, so he'll be very happy to meet you. He is an intense character, but very sweet. He is a good contact to have for getting in touch with rad bands and spreading the word about who is making stuff happen in different towns.

You should also meet jack at "The Metropolis" if you haven't already. I used to work with him to book and promote stuff all the time back when it was called The Underground. He is a great guy, though his knowledge of music is not broad enough that he will be able to seek out the good stuff on his own--or necessarily know how to promote stuff effectively. Once you get started, it's easy to build momentum and make WW a fun place for bands to stop. from 2001-2005 i got Dirty Projectors, pretty much the whole K roster, Shearwater, Cerberus Shoal, Mountain Goats, BARR, Faun Fables, Bonnie Prince Billy--lots of great shows through to come through, at the underground, at house shows, and at the college. At the time I had literally no idea what I was doing.

It is a challenge trying to bridge the college scene and also get the local kids excited. But it is deeply rewarding, and crucially important in a place like Walla Walla. Somebody's got to do it. Otherwise ASWC will only book jam bands, and the local scene will only be about screamo. I can give you more specific advice about how to promote shows, contact bands, etc if you are interested in going that deep.

I should be at the show tonight, probably one of the older people that will be there. I've done a summer show at KW the last few years and first did a show there in 1981.

I would agree with what Kevin says about promotion of shows at the Metropolis. I only knew about this show because I happened to walk by there a couple of weeks ago. I didn't even know about the Metropolis - I thought it was still closed down. I think it would be great if someone could help get the word out.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing Calvin and Adrian. I've know about Calvin for a long time, but have just starting checking out Adrian's music. Not sure what we'll hear tonight, but it should be interesting.
